On a PlayStation 3 hooked up to a cathodic television, is there any way to be able to read text better?

I have a flat screen cathodic TV, and trying to read text from Playstation 3 games is horrendous. My TV’s settings don’t touch screen settings or anything, I can just play with the colours. I’ve been messing around in the settings for the PS3 and was told there was an option for cathodic TV’s, but I think it’s only to make it so the screen doesn’t edge out of your field of sight…I can’t do anything about text.
Is there anything at all I can do, some way to make it easier to read?
(besides getting a modern rectangular television, I’m poor)
