Does crying hurt?

People cry, whether if it’s from a sad event, tears of joy, or if your emotions are mixed up like mine and start crying when something makes you angry.
I don’t really cry that often, but when I do like if I hear about horrible heartbreaking news, or other sad stuff I can’t cry “silent tears” I will bawl out loud like a baby & start hyperventilating (this is the part where you make fun of me) it is so embarrassing.
So whenever I know I’m about to cry (does ya’lls nose tingle when you’re about to cry?) I’ll try to “hold it back” but when I do that, for some odd reason, it will make my throat hurt like hell.
So I guess my question is:
When you try to stop crying does it make your throat hurt and why?
