Why would it hurt to hold a piece of metal (not hot or cold, but similar to a feeling of aluminum in the mouth, but in the body)?

I was hiking in the woods. I saw a metal auto bumper just laying in a meadow. I went and picked it up and felt a horribly wobbly pain in my muscles and bones. The metal bumper was not hot or cold. But it hurt to hold it.

What phenomenon can possibly cause this?
