Do the extremely violent and sexual controversial films have an effect on an adult's psyche?

Reading about some of the movies in this thread made me think. Why am I afraid to watch these movies? I know I could handle watching them, but why won’t I watch them?

Is it possible for a person to watch a really disturbing scene and be affected in a detrimental way?
