What are some things you do for first dates?

I have been following this question and it got me to thinking about first dates. Are there any rules you follow for every first date? Do you have certain rituals you perform beforehand? Do you always dress or prepare a certain way?

I’ve been on so few first dates that I don’t really have an established set of rules or preparations but there are still a few. As I mentioned in that thread, I try not to eat something super messy. I also determine beforehand if I think I want to kiss the guy at the end of the date. If I do, I don’t wear lipstick or lip gloss except for clear stuff, if I don’t think I will, I wear lipstick, if I’m not sure, I might wear it and then duck off to the bathroom to wipe it off before we’re done.

How about the rest of the collective? What do you do when you’re going on a first date?
