Which dog breed makes the best guard dogs?

I lean toward the Cane Corso ( http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/canecorsoitaliano.htm ), but dog preference is a rather personal thing. What’s your favorite breed, both for guard dogs and just as a pet or companion? Same breed or not?
