Which is a better value - double roll or single roll toilet paper?

They say you should buy the double roll so you use less, but I wonder if you use that much less. Of course, the reverse might be true – if it feels super thin, maybe you use more.
Has there ever been an informal study on this? Which should I buy, twice as many single rolls or half as many double rolls?
