Is there a way to get around the Captcha requirement?

Like on some sites when you sign up, they require you to in put a series of letters and numbers to ensure you’re not a robot. And Youtube, after a certain time, you’re required to do Captcha before posting a comment.
But does this really work? Can bots input these numbers?
