Does anyone think it's possible that Trump is setting the GOP up for failure?

I was reading more today about how the GOP primary is turning somewhat into a circus. The Herman Cain stuff issues that led him out of the race, the irony of people running from someone accused of affairs into the arms of someone convicted of affairs (Gingrich). Bachmann doing a good job of not saying something totally crazy for a while, but really messing herself up with all the anti-gay stuff (yah that’ll win the general election for you). And now the cherry on top, that even Republican stalwarts are declaring as the moment we stepped into a circus…. Donald Trump is hosting a Republican debate.

Now for those not in the know, Trump at one point (see 90’s) was a Democrat, and if I’m not mistaken even ran for an office on the Democratic ticket. Fast forward to a year or so ago when Donald Trump speeds onto the political stream, on the Republican side of things, taking up some of the most extreme right ideals (birther movement for example) and offering the most non-compromising opposition to anything Obama and the Democrats do/propose. He tried to portray himself as a business/capitalist genius, that could use his experience to pull the country out of it’s recession (the irony being he destroyed his own real estate business so bad that he had to do a show, the Apprentice, to make ends meet).

But anyways, the point of this all…. Today while reading it dawned on me. What if Trump is playing the entire GOP for fools? Don’t get me wrong, he’s always been….. shall we say… exuberant. But he’s never been flat out stupid, which some of the positions he took and things he said would suggest he was. Is it possible that he saw the huge Republican swing in the mid-term election and decided he was going to sabotage them? Keep in mind he didn’t really come onto the political scene until some time after the mid-term election.

Maybe he thought “Hey you know what, I’ve got a lot of money and a lot of public clout… if I go into the race on the Republican side, and start spouting off the most ridiculous things that the most extreme persons on that side think…. maybe I can derail the entire resurgence and keep the Democrats in power…” ????

Do you think it’s possible? Can you support that claim (whether it be for or against the possibility)?
