What made you decide to cut your long hair?

I wore my hair short for most of my life, but for the last 7–8 years it has been long. I’m bored with it, so I am considering a new cut, but like many people with long hair I’ve grown attached to the length.
I’m not one to cry over a bad haircut, I know that hair grows back, no big deal. I’m just on the fence. If you had long or very long hair and decided to cut it short (or shorter), what made you decide to do it? Did you keep it short? Did you like it, or did you grow it out after that first cut?
