How soon can a government employee apply for "status" jobs?

I just received a federal government job offer. It’s not an ideal position, but it’s a competitive service hire, and I figure it’s a foot in the door. My question is, how soon can I start applying to “status-only” jobs. From day one, or do I have to wait for my probationary period to end before I have “status”?
