Do steam engines have drivers?

My brother wants to know the answer to this obvious question. He said that you never hear someone say “oh, yeah, I drive a steam engine”. So he was very curious. After looking it up on Google, with no results of course, I decided to ask here.
So do steam engines have drivers or do they drive themselves?
