Are people who don't read other answers egocentric?

Asked by SmashTheState (14245points) April 19th, 2012

Many, many times on Fluther, I have witnessed people who give answers which have already either been given by someone else or, worse yet, given, discussed, and dismissed. Sometimes, it will be clear from reading other answers that the question has changed direction as a result of answers already given – and then in the middle of this new discussion, someone pops in and posts an answer relating only to the original question.

My personal experience is that these drive-by answers are usually the least useful ones, consisting either of chatty “me too” small talk or completely uninformed Dunning-Kruger commentary by someone whose sole qualification is possessing an opinion. I’ve noticed they rarely bother to revisit the question to see whether anyone might have objected to their answer, which leads me to believe their only interest is in making everyone around them aware of their personal opinions.

It seems to me that this obsessive need for people to stick their spoon in the pot and give it a stir regardless of their knowledge of the recipe or whether they even know what’s being cooked is a symptom of the celebration of anti-intellectualism, where not only is expertise not appreciated, but it’s actually resented and held in suspicion.

Is anyone else as annoyed by this phenomenon as I am?
