Why would MasterCard issue me a new card a year before the expiration date?

The number didn’t change, only the expiration date: from 9/13 to 9/14.
There was no accompanying explanation such as we’ve seen before, telling us that their records had been “compromised” and so we had to have a new card number.
We did not report a loss. We did not make a major purchase. We didn’t do anything weird.
Rather, they enclosed a nonexplanatory message telling us about the “great perks” of using this card.
