Why did I have to pay California sales tax on eBay just now?

I usually buy records maybe $30 USA and under. Before I finally confirm the purchase the whole sum totals up and there isn’t any sales tax added. Now I purchased something for $90 USA and I had to pay for sales tax. The seller lives in Indiana and that’s where the item is shipping from. Is this standard?
