Is Consumer Reports a truly objective and reasonably reliable source for product evaluation?

Asked by josie (30934points) March 7th, 2013

My dad would never buy a car or a lawn mower or whatever without checking Consumer Reports.
My dad is gone, but as I get a little older, and begin “consuming” larger ticket items, like a new car or dishwasher or stove or something, I recall my father and his faith in CR.
But, I also imagine that corruption my be more rampant than it was 20 years ago when I would see my dad would devour the latest issue of CR. Does CR get a kick back for a good rating, or a free round of golf or dinner or something?
Is it truly a good source for product evaluation?
