Why is there so little discussion in the news about shoplifting?

It is a real problem. There are a number of celebrities who have been caught.

I am old enough to remember when Bess Myerson got caught. My initial reaction was, how stupid! At the time, it was a major scandal. I searched on Amazon for books about the incident, but did not find much. I did find these two: this and this Got to love the irony.

What prompts people to shoplift, particularly those in the middle and upper classes. Is it a form of rebellion or act of irony? Is it a kind of thrill seeking? Might it be a kind of addiction, like gambling?
