Can you recommend lodging in San Diego?

My niece is graduating from pharmacy school at UC San Diego in May, and my wife and I would like to attend the graduation ceremony. We are looking for lodging that’s not too expensive or fancy, yet in a safe area. We are also looking to play tourist for a couple of days afterwards (Balboa Park? the zoo? Wild Animal Park?). Any suggestions?
