What are your thoughts on filibusters?

Asked by Mariah (25883points) June 26th, 2013

While I am very pleased today with the results of Wendy Davis’s filibuster, I have mixed feelings because I am only happy about it because I agree with its results. If I were on the other side of this debate, as I often am when filibusters prevent action, I would not be feeling fond of the filibuster at all right now.

Is it fair that one person can put a stopper on a bill’s progress like this? Is it right for our government to be purposefully inefficient when the people just want decisions made?

Senator Davis had to remain standing on the floor for the eleven hours of her filibuster. She wasn’t even allowed to lean on anything. Since when does physical strength qualify somebody to make decisions for the country? I know I couldn’t stand without eating or using a bathroom for eleven straight hours, does that make my beliefs less important?

The filibuster just seems like a very odd tactical tool to me, and I don’t fully understand why it’s still a thing. What are your thoughts?
