Is Egypt headed for a Syria-esque civil war?

Asked by DominicX (28808points) August 14th, 2013

The big item on Google News today are the recent crackdowns on protests in Egypt. The protests are being carried out by supporters of the recently ousted Muslim Brotherhood president Mohamed Morsi; the Egyptian military has responded to these protests by open-firing on them. Most reports seem to say about 200 dead as a result of today’s crackdowns that occurred across the country.

Egypt has ousted its second president in just a couple years. There’s no doubt that there is deep turmoil between the Muslim Brotherhood and their opponents.

Some articles were saying that there is really no hope of democracy in Egypt, but only more violence to come.

So what are your opinions? Is there going to be a civil war? Why can’t democracy work in countries like Egypt?
