In a theoretical rear-end car accident, would it be better to brake or not?

Using information from physics and anatomy… If someone was coming towards you in your rear view mirror, and wasn’t going to stop, would it be safer to brake and not allow your car to move forward as much, or would it be better to not brake, and reduce the force of the impact?
I saw the results of a massive rear-end accident and was wondering….
