Are Sony flatscreens really better than non-Sonys and how are they better if at all?

I knew an older, wealthy man (no; not an ex anything) who had a big Sony flatscreen and it just looked so darn elegant. Special. Beautiful. And it wasn’t even hanging; it was on a tv table of some sort. Are they just better or more expensive than other brands and why or why not?
