Are there any of you scholars out there, that specialize in studies of Europe during the Middle Ages?

(Possibly NSFW) One of my friends recently posted a picture of the Pointy Shoes that you see men wearing in paintings from that time period.

What was the idea behind the pointy toed shoes? I just read something that suggested the points were suggestive of the “male member” but that seems a little odd, especially considering that they were also wearing the equivalent of tights, rather than trousers, where you could pretty much see the goods.

Does anyone know the real reason why the shoes were so long and pointy?
