How to aviod violence&crime against gays in NYC:).. thanks!

Hi guys, thanks a lot for your attention! :)
Recently the rate of anti-gay crimes in NYC is getting higher and higher, I’m shocked to know that a gay guy was shot to death.
I’m a Chinese student and I’m going to study in NYC, I like here a lot, and people here are amazing :D But these crimes make me (I’m gay:b) a little frustrated.
Do you have some little tips to help avoid getting engaged in such things? Is there some common things I should notice&keep in mind to keep safe?
