Why does Single Malt Scotch make me burp so much?

Okay collective and scotch drinkers in particular, about three years ago I discovered the marvel of single malts. Luvvin’ it to death.

Here is my problem though, it makes me burp like crazy. All the time! It doesn’t matter if it is extremely peaty lowlands single malt or sweet Sherry cask highlands single malt.

Why is that? I do not experience this with any other type of distilled spirit, only single malt! Any ideas?

Establishing your sophistication in a social setting by telling 25yr old Highland Park apart from 25yr old The Dalmore goes out the window when you start burping like a barbarian 10 minutes later :P

I’m interested in a detailed chemical answer if at all possible.
