Can I clean the air filter by soaking it in gasoline and drying it?

Briggs&Stratton 6.5 hp running a Craftsman push mower. Found in neighbor’s front yard with “free” sign.
Took it home, removed air filter. Found it to be saturated with oil. Started right up without air filter. It’ll be a few days before I get to the parts store for the $5 filter.
