Can you ease my mind tonight about abnormal pap results?

Asked by Mariah (25883points) September 21st, 2015

I know I can call my doctor about this tomorrow but I was wondering if anyone could ease my mind tonight.

I had a pap smear a couple of weeks ago and just received the results in the mail today. The letter only says:

“Your Pap test did not show any evidence of cancer. However there were some atypical cells seen. These can be associated with menses or recent intercourse. I would like to repeat this test in one year.”

I’ve done some googling about abnormal pap results and it seems most of them require a follow up much sooner than one year so I’m confused about what this result might mean. Is it likely I have HPV? I have never had sex without a condom and have only had two partners in my life and one of them was a virgin. I have also had the Gardisil vaccination. I had just finished my period a couple of days before the test so I’m hoping it’s just from that? I did not find anything on the internet that implied that abnormal pap results could in fact be caused by my period.
