Is my Lexmark color ink cartridge defective?

Asked by ScottyMcGeester (1897points) December 19th, 2015

I bought new ink cartridges, black and color, for my printer. I hadn’t used my printer in a while but now I need to print stuff again.

I put both cartridges in and then the printer printed the usual test page. However, the color cartridge only printed out magenta – not cyan or yellow. The black printed fine.

I realigned the cartridges and even after that, only magenta printed.

The troubleshooter suggested to take a damp, lint-free cloth and press the color cartridge down gently and then slide it across the cloth. The closest I had to a damp “lint-free” cloth was a baby wipe. Three lines should appear – magenta, cyan and yellow. Still – only magenta appeared. I retried this a bunch of times – all I get on the baby wipe is magenta. If I press the cartridge down firmly, I see a faint dot of cyan and possibly yellow, but they still don’t come out when I slide the cartridge across the cloth.

What gives? I’m pretty pissed since I wasted a good hour trying troubleshooting the issue. I printed out like ten test pages after all of this. This really sucks if it’s defective because how do I get a refund? At the very least, the black works and I need to print black anyway but what can I do with the color one?

The cartridges are #‘s 28 (black) and 29 (color) for Lexmark. They came in a combo pack. My printer is a Lexmark X5495
