What is your opinion of "Beauty pageants" for toddlers?

I was just reading that France has banned them for girls under 16, and I saw some woman complaining and stating that pageants are no worse than allowing your toddler to run down the beach in a bikini. (Paraphrasing, and now can’t find the dang post)
It seems to me that with all we know about self esteem and body issues, there would be no real need to discuss the “ethics”, but that they should just be a shameful thing of the past which we no longer condone because we now know better.
Apparently, I’m in the minority.
Anyone care to weigh in about this topic?
