Why do people tell lies when telling the truth would be just as easy, if not easier?

I’ve known or been related to a number of people in my life that seemed to think that a lie that cannot be easily disproved is as good as the truth.
No matter that everyone knows they’re lying. How is getting by with the lie its own reward? What’s the reward?
