Is it true that 90% of Muslims are homophobic and sexist?

Unfortunately this is a claim I have been seeing a lot of lately. I know that some of you aren’t too fond of the religious based questions, so sorry if this post is not your cup of tea.

Anyway something I try to promote is equality for all human beings. I am struggling a bit when it comes to Muslims and Islam. It almost seems as if there is a somewhat consistent (or incomplete) levels of knowledge and information on both sides of this issue.

On one hand, I want to point out that not all Muslims are terrorists or associated with ISIS or other terrorist groups. On the other hand I do see homophobia and sexism from Muslims. This homophobia is not necessarily violent. Its more on the same level as a conservative Christian of the 1950s.

Then again I do feel that there is a level of islamaphobia going on at the same time. I do see Muslims being generalised right off the bat. Before we even know the specific details on the attack in Orlando, there were comments all across the web speculating that it was probably a Muslim who did it.

And yet many Islamic nations have policies under sharia law that calls for the death of homosexuals or at the very least their imprisonment. There are similar harsh laws for women who commit fornication.

I guess what I’m asking here is, what argument promotes the reality and balance of what is really occurring here? Or how you’d you explain the reality of things to an islamaphobe?
