What is there to talk about with people from the Midwest?

I hate making small talk with people from the Midwest. My initial reaction to hearing they’re from the Midwest is sympathy. To me it’s like trying to talk to someone who’s dog just died. What do you say to someone who grew up in a place that you never want to go to or read about?
