How would I get over this past relationship?

I’m sorry for asking a personal relationship question on here, I just really need help.
I was with this guy for about a year, I really liked him. About 8 months ago, he sent me a text message saying his number was out of service. It was a fake message. I haven’t talked to him since and I honestly didn’t even realize it was a break up until a while after. I am still really upset about this and I don’t know if it’s because of the way he broke up with me, since I don’t know why he did it or anything, or if it’s because we were together for a while. In all honesty, I am having a hard time completely moving on and I need some advice because it still hurts.
