Why is Eurasia referred to as two different continents?

We’ve always been taught that there are seven continents. But if you count them you’ll find only six. Why is Eurasia broken up into Europe and Asia? Do Portugal and Germany not want to be associated with countries such as China and Korea in Asia, and vice versa?
