What is a good gift to make for someone?

His birthday is coming up and I really want to make him something for it. He is in Civil Air Patrol (military auxiliary) with me so I was thinking about making him something related to CAP, but his ex did something similar and they just broke up (He smashed what she made.) I don’t have any money to buy anything.
