Media coverage of the civil wars in El Salvador and Guatemala in the Cold War?

During the 1980’s, why did the anti leftist conflict in El Salvador get so much American press attention, while a similar anti leftist conflict in Guatemala, which was just as brutal and bloody, stayed totally off the media’s radar -to the point that most Americans didn’t even know it was happening? I presume one possible answer is the fact that perhaps Guatemala did not rely so much on US military aid funding; however, that may have not been the case.
