Are smartphone photos that are taken in burst mode each one an independent pic?

Specifically, if there are 10 iPhone pics taken in burst mode, can I delete one of them without affecting the others?

In addition, when viewed as a collection, there is an arrow pointing at one of the pics. It’s not always the first or the last pic in the set. Is the pic with the arrow the one that the camera “thinks” is the best shot?
