Should I tell my doctor about my social anxiety?

Asked by Lois0987 (73points) September 7th, 2017

So I’m going to the doctors for a yearly checkup at the beginning of every school year. I’m still in high school and I’m certain I have social anxiety but I haven’t been officially diagnosed and I’m not sure who I should look to so I can get help. ( I want help so I can’t get through a day happy) I can’t do public speaking, it’s hard making/maintaining friends and so much more etc. etc. I can’t tell my mother because she’s “old fashioned” as my older cousin (also has anxiety) says. she won’t completely understand why I’m always nervous even when I know I don’t need to be. So to get to my question; should I just tell my doctor? I know she’d have to go through my mom if I wanted help but I was thinking of taking medication too and see If that helps

does it cost less than weekly therapy? Because my mom definitely won’t pay for every week
