Are exorcisms still performed today?

Asked by Berserker (33548points) October 8th, 2017

Another question related to the book “The Exorcist”. I guess I’m feeling pretty Satanic today.
I thought it was interesting in the book how they go about trying to get permission from the church to perform an exorcism. You have to rule out anything scientific as proof of demon possession, show that to some higher ups and then they decide if it’s legit. In the book it says that while an exorcism hasn’t been performed since 1949, all priests have the power to drive out demons from a thing or a person and they receive training for this, even if it is very minimal.

Is that how it works for real? Or how it used to work? If someone really wants an exorcism done, can they really make that happen? What Christian branch does this still today? Are there any? Do priests really get training for this?

There was a girl back on AnswerBag who claimed her parents got an exorcist to see her because she was very rebellious and aggressive. So I’m guessing this can still be a thing today? Any information? Specifically I am wondering this about the modern scientifically advanced world that has Christian beliefs, such as North America and parts of Europe.
