Why does my dog fart when he walks up stairs?

Three steps, toot. Two steps, toot. Last step, toot.
This is something recent. About 3 weeks or so. He’s ten and in average health for his age. No change in diet or lifestyle.
It happens every time he’s walking ahead of me up the stairs. Right in my face. The nerve.~
