How can I convince people that their vote DOES matter?

So many people are so convinced that their vote does not matter, and the most recent presidential election seems, to them, to be proof of that. I’m trying to get people to vote in the midterms, but they bring up the election. I explain that the electoral college is not involved in this process and it will be the popular vote alone that will decide it.
I can’t seem to get through to them…..and then I have a couple of other people jumping in telling them they’re stupid and lazy and that, of course, shuts them down and we have to start over in PM.
What can I say to convince them? One gal says she doesn’t want to stand all day in line for nothing.
