Do cats become aware of the effect of catnip?

There is a book of cat photographs that was published recently with the title Cats On Catnip. The cats in the book really look strung out. Assuming that the cats get high on catnip. are they able to associate the stuff with the feeling? Would it be a pleasant feeling? If catnip were readily available, would they make regular use of it?
