Do you think the Saudi government was responsible for Khashoggi's death?

Jamal Khashoggi was a Saudi journalist, reportedly a “mild critic” of the Saudi regime and its crown prince Muhammad bin Salman.

Khashoggi disappeared on October 2nd at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey. He has not been seen since. Evidence has now come forth that he was killed, possibly by order of the Saudi government (according to Turkish officials).

If the Saudis killed him, why? The international reputation of the country is going to be severely damaged by this. The Saudis have always been good pals with America (despite being the source of modern Islamic fundamentalism, but whatever…) and this incident might usher in a break with them. I’m not saying “conspiracy”, but I have to wonder where the sense in this was.
