How does MRI detect extent of injury?

Often when an athlete gets hurt, an MRI is done.
My understanding is that MRI uses powerful magnets, but how can magnets detect what the injury was?
And, are there different kinds of MRI? Is the MRI that detects an ACL tear different from the MRI that detects cancer?
