Why do cell phone carriers push you to always upgrade your phone?

I get a rash of calls from my provider every so often saying, saying I qualify for a new phone, or telling me I haven’t had a new phone in years and should get a new one.
I am happy with the one I have, and if it stops working I will upgrade then why can’t they understand that?
