Useful to protect wacom tablet surface?

For the cheapest bottom line wacom tablet, the bamboo, should I bother protecting the surface? Within a week I’ve managed to make about 2 or 3 minor scratches but I have no idea how they came to be in the first place as I only use the tablet for drawing and I don’t make many sudden flicks. Is it the way I’m using it? Is it natural? Is it a stylus problem? Also, should I bother buying something to protect the surface, and if so what?
