Can you tell me characteristics, both positive and negative, about insular life?

Or, island life.
Do you live on an island, or have you ever done so?
Can you tell me what you have experienced are characteristics of said life, and/or how it differs from life on land?
From what I have seen and experienced, I can say that there’s a great sense of community, which has its ups and its downs.
Gossip is a basic necessity, it seems.
But people are ready to help anyone that is in need (family, or friend, or foe).
There’s is hardly any crime on the island.
But the nearest hospital can be as far away as an hour driving (most likely to be done by yourself (well, a family member or friend); ambulances are few, and not always close by.

Can you add to the list?
With things you’ve experienced, or with things that you can imagine after you’ve put some thought into it?

Thanks!
