What do you think the logic was behind designing waterbed sheets so that the fitted sheet and the top sheet are sewn together at the bottom?

We have a king size water bed and I just ordered two California King flat sheets. That’s all I’ve ever used is two flat sheets because fitted sheets do not work on a waterbed.
I wondered who came up with the idea of sewing them together and why? Why don’t they make them that way for regular beds?
