How do I text my crush if we don't know each other that well?

My crush and I are both in band (we’re both saxophones :D) and we’ve never really talked much except for small talk about band stuff. I got his number because we created a saxophone group chat, not because he personally gave it to me… He’s also two years older than me (he’s a senior and I’m a sophomore), and we’ve never met outside of band. We’ve known each other for about three years, though. Also, we’re both homeschooled, I don’t know if that’s important or not. I want to text him, but I don’t want to seem creepy or clingy or annoying or anything like that because we’ve never texted before, and I have no reason to text him out of the blue.
