What's the most horrendous or surprising thing you've ever stumbled upon?

Have you ever found treasure? An hidden historical artifact? A deep family secret? How did it affect you? How did you react?

My stumbling, years ago, while going through a previously abandoned property that had just been put on the market, led to the discovery of a human body in a closet of the guest house; the only remaining intact door on the entire property, that was not only closed, but jammed shut with a little black comb wedged in between the door and jamb. I assumed it would be filled with something illicit – since it was obvious that kids or transients had been partying on the property (empty liquor and beer bottles and other trash, as well as torn cushions, etc.), but when my boyfriend at the time yanked open the door, there was a man, upside down, crammed in and leaning against the back wall. I surprised us both by shrieking like an idiot, over and over again. It came out of me reflexively. You never know how you’ll react, I guess.

We were looking at the property, itself, because it had its own well and lots of big beautiful mature trees. We were no longer interested after finding the body. It turns out that the man had been partying with his friends – all of whom were on probation – and had overdosed. His “friends” then shoved him in the tiny closet and hit the road. He was well known to the regular patrolmen in that area. Pretty sad and weird.
